Comprehensive Care
of the
Young
Competitive
and
Mature Athlete

Youth in Sports
The young athlete, due to his unique growing musculoskeletal system, poses a specific group of medical problems. A child's ligaments are stronger than the growth plates, which are most susceptible to injury. An understanding of the growth physiology is essential in treating a growing injured athlete.

The Competitive Athlete
Fully-grown, striving for maximum performance in competitiion, these athletes are frequently at risk of injury. The orthopaedic challenge is to treat these injuries, permitting continued maximum participation. The goal is not just next-week's competition, but more importantly, a lifetime of participation.

The Mature Athlete
As we mature, our healing capacities diminish. Any change or sudden increase in activity, can readily lead to an overuse injury. An appreciation of this can guide the mature athlete in training and competition. An increase for the distance runner should not exceed 10% per week. Stretching to regain range of motion should be accomplished daily. The body is a wonderful machine that responds to how we care for it. Low impact sports, such as hiking, swimming and cross country skiing, permit a long-term participation in recreational sports. Maximum conditioning done judiciously in reasonable increments, will permit the optimum continued participation in sports.
